Main Differences Between Table Salt and Sea Salt

Salt and kosher salt can both be important when cooking food. Sea salt contains dissolved air, which makes it slightly more alkaline than ocean sea salt. Sea salt also comes directly from the sea, so it's an excellent natural resource of sodium. And table salt is the salt of choice when cooking for many people.

Salt and table salt differ primarily in the number of minerals they contain. Most sea salt contains significant amounts of calcium and magnesium minerals. And table salt tends to have relatively little magnesium and calcium. Because these minerals are found naturally in seawater, sea salt tends to be the healthier of the two varieties. A teaspoon of sea salt contains 2,300 mg of magnesium, or about half as much as table salt. The difference may be insignificant at first, but studies have shown that over time, increasing amounts of these minerals can reduce the risk of certain health problems.

People typically eat far less than is needed to meet their daily requirement for sodium, even though they may think they are eating too much. When you factor in that we often forget to measure how much salt we consume, we can see that the amount of table salt is much higher than what is recommended. On average, people in the United States get between two and three grams of salt per day, well below the recommended dietary levels.

One of the reasons that we are consuming so much of this seemingly harmless substance is that it is available in countless different varieties. Each variety of table salt offers trace amounts of different minerals. For example, there are sea salt varieties that are rich in zinc, calcium, and magnesium, while table salt offers only sodium chloride. Very little, if any, of the other trace minerals is contained in most varieties of this common, everyday product.

One of the main reasons why there is so much salt is because it lacks minerals like potassium, calcium, and magnesium. These trace minerals are necessary to maintain blood pressure and the ability of our muscles to relax. Most kosher salt varieties do not offer any of these essential minerals, as they are extremely salty. As a result, the salt causes our bodies to overwork, which increases our blood pressure and causes many of the diseases that are associated with hypertension.

Over time, our bodies accumulate a lot of extra sodium chloride in our tissues. Some of the salt is useful for the body, as it contributes to the production of acid, which helps to neutralize our blood vessels. Unfortunately, when the extra salt is not neutralized, it builds up in our tissues and makes us sick. This is why sea salt is considered a healthier alternative to table salt.

However, there are still some people who claim that table salt is better for you than sea salt, because it has been processed properly and does not contain any harmful chemicals or toxins. However, the only way to know for sure is to choose the type of salt that you prefer, and then go shopping for it. If you do your research, you will find out that there are literally thousands of different processed salts on the market, and only the ones that are healthiest and contain all of the trace minerals that our bodies need are going to be included.

One of the main differences between the two is the texture. Sea salt tends to be crunchy whereas table salt tends to be softer. The taste is also different, as sea salt is generally salty while table salt mostly tastes free. However, regardless of the texture, the best choice is going to be the one that has the right amount of minerals in it.
