New research found that a single dosage of psilocybin, a composite found in "magic mushrooms", provides long-term relief from depression and anxiety in cancer patients.

Indeed, cancer patients who were given psilocybin reported decreased depression, stress, demoralization, hopelessness, and fear of death for more than four years after receiving a dose combined with psychotherapy. Results show that psilocybin therapy is a promising tool for improving the emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being of patients with life-threatening cancer, said Dr. Stephen Ross, Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Langon Health.

The results are based on improvements the team first reported in 2016. 29 cancer patients associated with anxiety and depression were given a single dose of psilocybin or a placebo vitamin called niacin. Seven weeks later, they accepted the opposite. This was combined with nine psychotherapy sessions.

Six and a half months after all patients took psilocybin, about 60% to 80% showed clinically significant reductions in anxiety, depression, and existential distress, as well as improved attitudes toward death.

Fifteen of the first participants were followed 3.2 and 4.5 years later and showed a permanent long-term improvement, with more than 70% of them attributing "positive changes in life to therapy experiences and" being most significant in terms of personality and personality.

This approach has the potential to change the paradigm in psychological and existential care for cancer patients, especially those with terminal illnesses.
